Due to the increased number of older people within social groups with higher standards of civilisation, these two fields are gaining in importance. The aim of the research work is to find a comprehensive solution to the various problems associated with human ageing, as well as to \u2018add years to life and life to years\u2019. What research wants to discover in this field is: a deeper understanding of the biological mechanism of ageing (i.e. the general processes and specific phenomena related to particular living and working conditions); the study of man\u2019s psychological attitudes towards the passage of time, illness and ageing; a better understanding of illness in old age, the behaviour of older people during illness and their response to drug treatment; knowledge of the social and economic problems caused by the increasing elderly population and their most appropriate solutions. These topics should be discussed periodically at professional and international meetings in order to ascertain the state of research in this field, to spread knowledge among experts and young researchers, and to stimulate research and coordinate initiatives. The school aims to become a centre of this kind, promoting the exchange of information, offering refresher courses for experts, and training young graduates.
