The school consists of a series of special seminars aimed at exploring alternative strategies for the conservation and enhancement of the historic city of Erice. Erice, founded more than 3000 years ago, was, under the Phoenicians, the centre of their Mediterranean thalassocracy, and later became one of the most important religious and military settlements in Sicily. The existing historical centre, one of the most magnificent examples of Italian urban culture, dates back to the 15th century. In recent decades, Erice has undergone a strong process of obsolescence and abandonment. But in recent years, actions have begun to save Erice. Since 1963, the Majorana Centre has promoted the development of economic and cultural activities that best suit Erice\u2019s historical, artistic, and natural resources. In 1972, the International School of Environmental Sciences was established to coordinate the planning of the conservation programme and the restoration of the most prestigious historical architecture. The seminars will deal with the following aspects: 1) analysis and evaluation of environmental change in Erice; 2) identification of problems: social, economic, and physical; 3) evaluation of existing regional planning policy; 4) formulation of alternative planning proposals; 5) criteria for the restoration of selected historic quarters; 6) guidelines for the expansion of educational facilities at the Majorana Centre. These seminars will establish a work programme to save Erice. To this end, the school is promoting an international initiative in cooperation with the Italian Art & Landscape Foundational in New York.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
