Pharmacology is the study of drugs. A drug is any substance that is useful for the diagnosis, treatment, study or prevention of disease or the modification of physiological functions. In the recent past, public and private institutions have made great efforts to support drug research. This has contributed to prolonging life expectancy and improving quality of life. The continuous progress of pharmacology is essentially due to its development as a multidisciplinary science. Studying the effects of drugs requires a solid knowledge of basic medical sciences (e.g. biochemistry, physiology, microbiology), as well as knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry, biophysics, molecular biology and medical practice. The School aims to facilitate and promote relations between scientists involved in the various disciplines related to the study of drugs. This will enable highly qualified interdisciplinary exchanges of new ideas and information. The topics that the School intends to address in particular depth are issues related to molecular pharmacology, which studies the mechanism of action of drugs at the molecular level, and clinical pharmacology, which studies the effects and interactions of drugs in humans.
